A Fractional CTO is a senior technology executive who works with your company on a part-time or engagement basis. Instead of hiring a full-time CTO, you get experienced technical leadership when you need it, without the long-term overhead.
When should a company bring in a Fractional CTO?
Most companies call me when something has gone wrong: a vendor has failed, a project is stalled, systems are unstable, or compliance risks are rising. Others bring me in when they’re growing quickly and need senior technical leadership before hiring a full-time CTO.
Do you write code yourself?
Sometimes, especially early in a rescue. But my primary role is to assess, plan, and lead. I typically bring in or manage the right developers, vendors, or internal team members to execute the work.
Do you replace our existing team?
Not by default. In many cases, the existing team is part of the solution. If changes are needed, I help restructure the team or bring in the right resources.
What if we already have an IT manager or development lead?
That’s common. I work alongside internal staff, giving them clearer direction, priorities, and support. Often, they’ve simply been put in a situation that exceeds their role or authority.
How long does a typical engagement last?
Most engagements run between 6 and 4 years. Some are short-term rescues, while others transition into ongoing fractional leadership. I have multiple 5+ clients.
